BRASS IN THE PARK – BRASS BAND CONTESTS
SATURDAY 30 AUGUST 2008

Following consideration of feedback received from bands after last year’s event, the format of the day for senior bands has been altered to provide three separate elements being an own choice March & Hymn Tune Contest, a Marching Deportment Contest and the opportunity to perform an own choice programme.

Each of the three elements is entirely separate. Bands may elect to take part in any one of the elements, any two of the elements or all three of the elements. It is entirely a matter for each band to decide which part or parts of the programme you might wish to participate in.

The March & Hymn Tune Contest is open to bands of all grades. Bands will perform seated on stage in the main marquee. The total prize fund amounts to £2,000. As was the case last year, no registration process or guest player rules will operate and bands will be entitled to use the services of any player. It will even be possible for bands to join forces and form a one off combination for the purposes of the event.

The Marching Deportment Contest is entirely separate from the March & Hymn Tune Contest and will have no bearing on that contest. The winning band will receive a prize of £200. In addition, each band participating in the Marching Deportment Contest will receive £100.

The performance of an own choice programme is entirely non competitive and will have no bearing on either of the contests. Bands electing to perform a programme will be asked to provide a 20 minute own choice programme at a venue in either the tented village or at the nearby Scottish Mining Museum. Each band which performs a programme will receive a payment of £100.

It is intended that this event should operate in a relaxed and informal manner, providing bands and their members with an enjoyable day out and something a little different in the Scottish contest calendar. Whilst open to all grades of contesting bands, it is hoped that the format of the event will also prove to be of interest to non contesting bands which do not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in large scale banding events.

See Word Documents links at top of this page for further information on senior band events and entry form for senior bands.

The Youth Contest at Brass in the Park has become a major event in its own right and, together with the Scottish Youth Brass Band Championships, forms one of the two major annual showcases for the fast growing youth band sector in Scotland.

This year we shall be offering three separate sections being Novice, Development and Senior, which together will accommodate bands ranging from small ensembles with relatively young and inexperienced players to larger and more experienced bands with members up to 18 years of age. A prize of a new cornet will be awarded to the winning band in each of the three sections of the Youth Band Contest.

See Word Documents links at top of this page for further information on youth band contests and entry form for youth bands.

One of the attractions of Brass in the Park for many bands is the opportunity given for senior bands and junior/training bands from the same band organisation to take part in the same event. It is appreciated that, in many cases, young players will be members of both the senior band and the junior/training band. Timings for the day will therefore be arranged to ensure that the Youth Band Contest will not be taking place at the same time as any senior band performance involving the same band organisation.

If at least 10 bands participate in the Marching Deportment Contest and if around the same number of bands elect to perform a programme, the total value of the cash prizes in the senior band contests, the payments to bands for participation in certain elements of the programme and the prizes of instruments in the youth band contests will exceed £5,000. Brass in the Park 2008 will therefore be one of the most lucrative contests for participating bands ever staged in Scotland.

We hope that our format for 2008 will be of interest to your band and that you will wish to participate in one or more parts of the programme arranged for senior bands and/or the Youth Band Contest. If you require any further information, please contact us E-Mail enquiries@brassinthepark.org.uk
