Contest for Youth Bands

This contest is intended to provide all youth bands with an opportunity to perform at a high profile event before a large and supportive audience and to participate in a contest. The contest is divided into 4 sections. The rules for all sections are similar to those which will apply in these particular sections at the 2010 Scottish Youth Brass Band Championships. Other than the winners in each section, no bands will receive placings. Each band will be graded and will receive either a gold, silver or bronze award with the intention of creating a positive experience for all participants. In addition, in the Development, Senior and Premier Sections, the best soloist or instrumentalist in each section will be awarded a separate trophy and will receive a special commemorative medal.

The winning band in each section will be presented with a new Cornet.
Medals will be awarded to all players in all bands in each of the sections.

Novice Section - This section is intended to meet the requirements of smaller and/or less experienced ensembles. It has an upper age limit of 14 years on 1 January 2010, no registration and no upper limit on the number of players. Four overage or adult players (any instrument) are permitted in each band in this section. Bands in this section will play an own choice programme not exceeding 10 minutes playing time.
Development Section - This section has an upper age limit of 16 years on 1 January 2010, no registration and no upper limit on the number of players. One overage or adult bass player is permitted in each band in this section. Bands in this section will play an own choice programme not exceeding 15 minutes playing time. Other than the winners, no other bands will receive placings.
Senior Section - This section has an upper age limit of 18 years on 1 January 2010, no registration and no upper limit on the number of players. Bands in this section will play an own choice programme not exceeding 15 minutes playing time. Other than the winners, no other bands will receive placings.
Premier Section - This section has an upper age limit of 21 years on 1 January 2010, no registration and no upper limit on the number of players. Bands in this section will play an own choice programme not exceeding 20 minutes playing time. Other than the winners, no other bands will receive placings.

Bands may enter different ensembles in more than one section if desired. If a band is taking part in more than one section, players are permitted to play in more than one ensemble entered by the same band, providing they come within the relevant age limits. We will ensure that bands are timetabled to play to allow players to participate in both youth and senior events.

Contest for Senior Bands - March & Hymn Tune Contest

Bands will play an own choice march & hymn tune seated on stage in the main marquee in the Mining Museum grounds. With the agreement of SBBA, no registration procedures will apply at this event. With the exception of the normal maximum limit of 25 brass players plus percussionists as required, there are therefore no rules or restrictions concerning the composition of bands at this event. Bands will be entitled to use the services of any players and indeed bands may even elect to join forces to form a one off combination for the purposes of this event. Any such “scratch” bands will be considered to be Championship Section for the purposes of this event.

Overall First Prize – £500
Deportment Prize – £100
Individual Section Prizes
(to be awarded in Championship, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and Non-Contesting Sections)
1st Place - £300
2nd Place - £200
3rd Place - £100

Slow Melody Contest
For the first time, we are delighted to offer the opportunity for individual players to participate in a Slow Melody Contest. This is open to all recognised brass band instruments and age groups. There will be a Youth Section (players aged under 16 on the day of the Contest) and an Open Section (which is open to all age groups, including youth players). A trophy will be presented to the winning player in each section. A piano accompanist will be provided, please present parts no later than the start of the contest (time to be advised). If preferred, parts can be forwarded to the address below. Please complete a separate entry form for each individual entry.

To Take Part
Simply complete the appropriate entry form and return it as soon as possible to Julie Sanderson, 50c High Street, Cowdenbeath, Fife, KY4 9NE. The closing date for entries is 31 July 2010, however, as there is a limit to the number of bands we can accommodate and as entries are prioritised by date of receipt, bands are advised to submit entries as early as possible. Please ensure that all entries are accompanied by the appropriate cheque, made payable to “Brass in the Park”.
